Who We Are

As fourth-generation ranchers raising and teaching the fifth generation, we are committed to preserving the natural environment and providing our customers with healthy and delicious beef. Vigorous grasslands enhance biodiversity, provide wildlife habitat, prevent soil erosion and groundwater contamination, and protect soil from drought. Our pasture-based production system promotes the preservation of open space and native species, and ensures a beautiful and vibrant landscape for our family, our animals and the community.

Our Practices: Practice Makes Our Practices Perfect

We strive to improve our land management practices through continuous education, observation and experimentation. We’ve made important advancements, including implementing low input farming practices like eliminating chemical fertilizers, the single greatest source of nitrous oxide pollution in the United States. We have also focused our restoration efforts on planting deep-rooted perennial grasses that store carbon in the soil and remove it from the atmosphere. We leave residual forage for elk and deer and ungrazed cover for birds.

Sustainability: The Value of Our Land Is Its Productivity

In addition to the environmental benefits it provides, raising cattle on grass allows us to grow food in areas unsuitable for cultivation by using solar energy, instead of fossil fuels. When solar energy and grass provide the foundation for making a living, open space takes on a much greater significance than a beautiful view.

Certifications: Certified Grassfed by Food Alliance

Carman Ranch was the first Oregon ranch to earn grassfed beef certification from Food Alliance, the most comprehensive third-party certification program for sustainably produced food in North America. Food Alliance’s grassfed certification guarantees that animals eat only grass, never any grain or grain by-products, nor do they receive hormones or antibiotics of any kind. Food Alliance certification also ensures that our ranch meets rigorous criteria for safe and fair working conditions, soil and water conservation, protection of wildlife habitat, and healthy and humane animal treatment.
